It's not me, it's Lue

Earlier this afternoon the Magic traded Keith "Vintage" Bogans and some cash for Milwaukee Bucks point guard and returning Magician Tyronn Lue.

This from ESPN:

"Tyronn is a veteran point guard who fits in well with our style of play," Magic general manager Otis Smith said in a statement. "He shoots well from 3-point range and adds needed depth at that position. We thank Keith for everything he gave to us and wish him all the best."

Lue has played 30 games this season for Milwaukee, averaging 4.7 points and 1.5 assists. He played 76 games for the Magic in 2003-04 and will be asked to help in Nelson's absence.

Schmitz says the deal is "pretty decent," but that guy can barely spell. On the other hand, our friends at the Orlando Magic Blog are appalled by the trade ("Fuck You Otis"). I'm personally worried because dude looks like he's about 12 and just scrapes 6 feet.

Lue during his '03-04 year with the Magic:

Games started/played: 69/76
Points: 10.5
Assists: 4.2

His FT and 3-point percentages this year:

FT: .750
3P: .467

So, what up crew?

  1. Slight gain. Don't care for Lue personally but he's got a good assist to turnover ratio and is decent with the treys. Just as long he doesn't make mistakes and does his job for 12-15 minutes a night, I'm cool with it. Plus he's got an expiring contract so the team can boot him if he sucks and it's not like Bogans was seeing any action after being relegated to 4th string shooting guard.

I'd have preferred it if Otis could've grabbed a younger dude with upside like CJ Watson or Ramon Sessions but they're playing too well to trade for the Magic's scraps. Regardless, Hedo's gotta step things up.

As for Magic blogs, there's only one:

  2. I never liked Tyronn Lue. The fact that he's been on a steep decline since 2006 and hasn't cracked 20 minutes per game since then makes him the formal definition of a stopgap. I agree that Ramon Sessions would have been much more interesting, but I am sure the price was too high.

The fact is, he will not even come close to making up for the loss of Nelson by himself. Howard, Lewis, and Turkoglu will have to try and fill that gap, and Lue will have to facilitate them. I guess the question is, how quickly will he pick up the system and become poised enough to run the offense? Given that we're more than halfway through the season, he had better get in the game fast or risk discombobulating the offense. And even if he gets into gear, I am fairly convinced that the offense will be a fraction of what it was no matter how hard the Magic Big 3 try, and pressing on the offensive end can hurt a team on the defensive end. I just think the loss of Nelson is close to insurmountable at this point, but I could certainly be wrong.

Plus, the Hawks passed up Chris Paul because they thought he was decent (which he is not), so he's got that bad karma going for him.
